About MotionFrame

A focused, free motion graphics editor that runs entirely in your browser — and keeps your work on your own device.

What MotionFrame is

MotionFrame is a browser-based video editor built specifically for motion graphics. It is a small non-linear editor: a project has a size, a frame rate and a duration; the project holds layers; and layers have animatable properties you drive with keyframes and read back on a timeline. You can import video, images and audio, or build a piece entirely from text, numbers, shapes and lines.

Preview, playback and export all share one rendering pipeline, so the composition you watch on the canvas is the same one written to your exported file. There are no staged mock-ups or placeholder controls — every visible control does something real.

Why it exists

Making something move usually means a choice between heavyweight software that takes an evening to install and learn, and online tools that ask for an account and put a watermark on your work. MotionFrame is a middle path: open a page, animate a title or a number, export a clean file, close the tab. It is deliberately focused — it does motion graphics and layering well rather than trying to be everything.

Built on the browser, not around it

MotionFrame is written as standard web modules and runs fully client-side. Rendering uses WebGL, video encoding uses the browser's own WebCodecs where available, storage uses IndexedDB, and its libraries are bundled rather than pulled from a CDN. That means there is no upload step, no server processing your footage, and no third-party script deciding how fast your editor starts. The trade-off is honest and documented: some formats and effects depend on what your browser can encode, and MotionFrame only offers the ones it can actually produce.

Your media stays on your device

Privacy here is a design choice rather than a promise bolted on afterwards. Imported video, images and audio are read locally with the standard File API and kept in your browser's own storage. Project autosave happens on your machine, and a saved project file is self-contained, with its media embedded, so it moves with you instead of living on someone's server. Nothing you edit is transmitted anywhere.

Where the project is today

MotionFrame is a free, feature-frozen release that is still being polished — the editing engine is stable, and the current work is on reliability, performance and the public website you are reading now. It is not a replacement for a professional finishing suite: there is no deep compositing or colour grading, transparent-background export is not available (MP4 and WebM have no alpha channel), and the editor is designed desktop-first. Within that scope it aims to be fast, predictable and genuinely useful.

Using it

  • MotionFrame is free to use, with no account and no watermark.
  • For the best export support, use a current Chromium-based browser such as Chrome or Edge.
  • Questions about specific capabilities are answered on the FAQ page.

Try it for yourself

The editor is one click away, and nothing you import leaves your device.
